"But couldn't I just do this myself for free?"

Honestly? Yes. The government runs a free Pension Tracing Service. It's a phone number you can ring.

Here's what doesn't get mentioned. The free service is essentially a directory of pension providers. It gives you contact details — it doesn't contact anyone for you, doesn't tell you the value of your pensions, and doesn't chase responses when providers go quiet.

Doing it properly yourself looks like this:

Try to remember every employer you've worked for. Including the ones from 25, 30, 35 years ago.
Find out who runs each scheme now. Companies sell, merge, rebrand. Pension administrators change. Schemes get bought up by bigger schemes. The pension you paid into in 1996 probably isn't called that anymore.
Ring the government's Pension Tracing Service. They give you contact details — not balances, not values, not what's actually in the pot.
Write to each provider individually. Send certified ID. Wait 6–8 weeks per letter.
Hope you've contacted the right administrator. Hope they can find your record. Hope nothing's been transferred without you knowing.
Repeat for every pot. Track which providers have responded. Chase the ones that haven't.

How long does the full trace take?

Some responses can begin arriving within 7–14 days, but in most cases a full trace takes a few weeks. The timeline depends on how quickly providers respond and how complex the case is. Older pensions and schemes linked to employers that no longer exist can take longer. We keep you updated throughout.

What if I can't remember everywhere I've worked?

That's the norm, not the exception. Most of our customers can only recall their employers in broad strokes — "a sales job in Manchester in the 90s", "something to do with the council in the early 2000s". We work with what you give us. You don't need a perfect memory for this to work — but the more detail you provide, the better the trace.

Is £249 the total cost? Are there extras?

Do you sell my data or pass me to financial advisers?

We don't sell your data. Pension Pie is a tracing service, not an advice firm — we find your pensions, give you the report, and that's it. We don't take commissions, we don't sell leads, we don't push you towards any consolidation product. What you do with your report is entirely your decision.

What does the money-back guarantee cover?

If our forensic team completes a full search and is unable to identify any pension scheme in your name, we'll refund your £249 fee in full. The guarantee applies to purchases on or after 1 May 2026 and is subject to qualifying conditions including providing complete employment history, a valid NI number, and accurate information within 72 hours of sign-up. I've already started looking myself — is it too late?

Not at all. Tell us what you've already found and we'll pick up from there. Around a third of our customers come to us partway through trying to do it themselves. The DIY route gets you so far; we finish the job.

I'm not retiring for another 5–10 years. Should I do this now?

What information do you actually need from me?
